"Dallas" x "Gypsy" CURLY chestnut horse colt born 6/9/2011

Nostalgic horse day! Gypsy gave us another gorgeous horse colt! At 19 years old, this is her last one :< She has had 3 fillies and 8 horse colts, three were kept as studs. What a wonderful mare she has been. "Gypsy " was my first fox trotter. I bought her as a long yearling in 1992 for around 1,000-- alot for a horse back then! When I saw her , at first thought she was a mule-- her ears were long, she was hump backed, ewe necked, and pretty skinny. She just had a sweet look about her that I couldn't forget. She also had great round bone in her legs.

The deal was clinched when the seller said another party was interested in her for breeding mules! NOT this sweet filly! SOOO --The seller was kind enough to take half payment in a watercolor painting. My awesome sister lent me the other half and I made payments back to her. Thus began my love of fox trotter horses. I have owned fox trotters ever since then!

When Gypsy was two years old, one of my wishes came true when I trained her myself. I used John Lyons method on ground work, but was a little nervous about how fast he got on his colts.

By now that scrawny yearling was a big gorgeous 16 hand 2 year old mare. So I asked my neighbor Jerran Flinders to help me through the riding part. Jerran was so kind and helpful and even let me use his round corral. Gypsy trained out easy and so nice, we rode many miles together. By the time she was 3 years old, she was over 16 hands, so I decided to breed her-- I had heard that that slows/ stops upward growth-- Anyways, she fully matured and filled out by the time she was six years old, and she was 16.3 hands! Her first foal was given to my husband. He named the big sorrel colt Business-- so when people asked where he was he could say he was out on business!

I was approached several times by a gentleman interested in buying "Gypsy". I finally told him huge sum that I did not think he would pay-- and he wrote me out a check. (Morlin had told me that my horses should be a business and that I could not be emotionally attached) So my "Gypsy" was sold when she was about 8 years old. I tried to buy another mare like her -- but that was not to be.

SOOO five years later when I was offered to buy "Gypsy" back, I jumped at the chance! She had been foundered and was lame on her front feet. So we have tried to keep her sound and healthy as long as possible-- yes, I soaked her grass hay for years and fed her "Safe and Sound" or beet pulp. So this is her last foal. Sadly, we had her put down this last October.

The palomino ("Gypsy's Yellow Major L.) is a 16.1 hand stallion out of "Gypsy". He is owned by Chris Guyman of Huntington, UT

"Princess" x "Dallas" -- buckskin filly born 6/1/2011!

BUT.....It is another straight haired foal! :C "Princess" has given us buckskins every time! One Grand Mare! When I purchased this mare, unknown to me, she had foundered. At the time I had no idea what that was. Since purchasing her, I have had her on grass hay, which I soak in the summer, and have fed her "Safe 'N Sound" a no sugar- starch supplement when she is in foal. She is better when she is in foal, so I have used her as a broodmare since I purchased her. So a month after she foals, "Princess" has another episode-- I think it had something to do with hormones, as I did not change her feed? She became very lame ;C So sadly we put her down when the foal was weaned at 6 months. Photos are of Princess and her last three foals! MO Rowdy is a sooty buckskin just like his mom. I am so grateful that I could own this gorgeous mare for a short time, and hopefully make her comfortable in her last years.

"Creme" gave us a gorgeous big buckskin paint curly filly on May 3, 2011. She is also sired by "DCC Vegas" ! With those shocking blue eyes under those curled black eyelashes, I couldn't resist naming her "MO Vegas Showgirl". "Showgirl" is people friendly, easy to work with, has great conformation and size! Her mom is 15.3 hands! When I drive by on the tractor she comes running! NICE! Thank-you Creme!

"Sapphire" delivered a gorgeous curly filly on April 25th. "MO Starfire" is sired by "DCC Vegas. This filly is absolutely gorgeous with a pretty dished head (brains included), great disposition, people friendly, and smart! Can you tell I am in love with this girl?

So crazy weather!! About 1 week before "Sapphire" delivered, we had put her in the galvanized panel shed under the barn. I was in the coverall barn getting horse feed and it sounded like a train was bearing down on me! I looked out the door-- the wind was blowing so hard that my car was moving side to side!
As I stood in the doorway of the coverall barn, I watched the metal roofing on our hay barn peel off like a big sardine can. The sheets flew over our horse corrals and into the neighbors field. The horses ran to the far corner of the field, all except "Mansey" who would rather die than miss a chance to eat! All competition gone--she headed for the manger-- directly in the path of the sheets of metal flying overhead-- and happily munched on the hay, oblivious to the overhead danger! (That's my girl!-- I feel the same way about chocolate! )
After the micro-burst windstorm, I walked around and did a head count (literally) on my horses-- none of them were hurt! Not even "Mansey"! Half of the barn roof had ripped off and flown into the next field and some landed in the top of our horse field next to the fence!
When I checked under the hay barn, the wind was so strong it pushed the heavy steel panels on "Sapphire's" stall and she was sandwiched between them-- A big fat pregnant mare -- no spare room around her! Luckily she stayed calm and had stood where the water barrel and stall door had braced the walls from totally closing in on her. Good horse! CRAZY DAY!

Foals are arriving! Della delivered a curly palomino horse colt with a handsome blaze and no white socks! He is sired by "DCC Vegas" a curly stud that is now in France. He was born April 2nd and of course his mom timed it to be during a freezing blizzard! The snow was flying sideways. Luckily my wonderful husband had made a shelter under the hay barn!
He was born with a contracted tendon, which straightened out within a couple of days. His one front leg was crooked so we kept him confined for a month, then had surgery to straighten it out. The vet thinks it was caused from being cramped when in his mom. Then we had to keep him clean and dry for another month! It was a very wet spring so I cleaned stalls and moved pens for about a month! NOT a good start!

Elk and Deer hunt in Colorado, fall 2010

So my boys (Husband and three sons) went elk hunting in Colorado. Of course they took horses and of course they are Missouri fox Trotters! On Saturday they shot two deer. (Hey! It was the last day of their hunt! Why spoil the hunt by shooting one on the first day?) "Taboo" ("Boo"-for short) packed out both of the deer on the same day-- NO PROBLEM! "Boo" is out of my favorite big "Gypsy" mare.

Bad News, Good News

So after Christmas, I had a holiday hangover and was rubbing my head. I felt a bump on the top of my head. I have had several basal cell carcinomas, so at my scheduled dermatology visit, I asked my Dr. to look at it. He said he did not like the looks of it and took a biopsy and sent it to the lab. So a week later, BAD NEWS, he called and said it was a melanoma cancer.
When the nurses were getting my "history"-- I had spent my entire youth outside as we lived in Fresno, CA on a grape farm the made raisons. Sunscreen was not even invented, and I didn't wear a hat very much. I am also fair skinned (1/2 Danish) and my grandfather on my dad's side died of skin cancer. Also, there is cancer on my mother's side of the family. So I am pretty set-up to get skin cancer :<.
I was referred to a specialist, and on Feb. 13th they shot radioactive dye into the site, and did a cat-scan. They marked where the dye showed up- on my left neck and jaw. Then on Feb. 14th I went into surgery. They took out lymph nodes and the cancer site on top of my head. It was about the size of a deck of cards and 1/4 " deep! (Now you can honestly say I am a few cards short of a deck!) Didn't know you had that much skin and muscle on your head! Then I went in every week and they scrubbed the site to take off old scabbing and encourage growth. OUCH! Then about a month later, a patch of skin was taken of my front thigh and grafted to the top of my head. (John offered to donate a patch of skin off his back so that I would have hair on the spot!) When doing the surgery, a nerve was bruised/ damaged, so I have a lazy bottom lip on one side. It seems to be getting better, or I am getting used to it. Makes me look MEAN! John says I look like Steve McQueen! Thanks John!
GOOD NEWS-- all the pathology came back NO CANCER ! So we got it before it spread!
So the graft took and I am healing and feeling better everyday! Ruth called the other day and asked how I was feeling. I told her that I got tired easily and that I still had some aches and pains. She said "Mom! That's just because you are old!" So yes, I am old but feeling better every day. Thanks Ruth.
I feel really loved because everyone has been so kind and so concerned! Neighbors brought in meals for weeks after every operation! And everyone is so kind! I even get compliments on the hats that I wear! Thanks! B

Don't you love Saydee's chubby cheeks! She has them at both ends! If I may quote my favorite oldest son John, FAT is cute until you are 8 years old!

WE have an abundance of grand daughters and they are FUN and full of life! One day Charlie walked in wearing her Tinkerbell costume and I said "Hi Charlie!" She looked at me and said-- "Grandma, I'm Tinkerbell!"

Our grandsons, Eddie and baby Milo are the calm ones of the bunch!

WE went camping with Charlie and Andie and family-- Of Course, we brought horses. Andie took a shine To "Jack" our black fox trotter gelding. She now includes him in family prayers and asks Grandpa "How's Yack?"
Morlin and I slept in the horse trailer and the girls and John slept in their camper. The next morning, Charlie, 3 years old, wanted to see our "Camper". When I opened the trailer and she saw all the horse poop, she was pretty disgusted! "Grandma B-- you slept in there?"
After a early morning ride, we ate breakfast. Of course, Business was pretty upset that he was NOT invited and helped himself!

WOW! I need to catch up! ICHO Convention- Eureka, NV -- 2010

Last fall 2010, Morlin and I attended the ICHO (Curly Horse) Convention in Eureka, Nevada! We met some wonderful people, listened to great discussions and watched a great demo on Indian horse gear by Mitch. My favorite part was going to the Peter Damele ranch. In earlier times, they were big horse breeders. They had captured some local curly wild horses and had included them in their herd. One severe winter, most of their horses died-- except the curlies! One of Peter Damele's favorite stallions was a curly stud that was super friendly and gentle.

The ranch was out in the middle of nowhere-- alias Eureka, Nevada. They had built their farmhouse and outbuildings out of rocks and cedar logs. The roof was cedar thatch layers with mud plastered over it. They had updated the ranch house and added a metal roof on top of the thatch! Neat! They had used the local rock on their house, water trough and out buildings. Behind and west of the house was a spring with a creek flowing through a meadow deep in grass.

The ranch was so far-out that they were totally off -the-grid! --whether they liked it or not! There were alot of windmills, batteries.... KINDA NICE!

But the BEST was when we saw a bunch of wild horses running just south west of the ranch! It was cool to look at them in the binocs and see their curly manes and tails blowin' in the wind! FUN! FYI - they are the spec in the middle of the photo! The three sorrels in the front are curlies!

Today I wormed all our horses except the foals and newly pregnant moms! It is getting cold-- so this is the last chance until spring! (Wormers are effective between 40- 80 degrees-- the worms go dormant when the temperature is out of that range) I wormed 12 horses by myself, as my hubby is off scouting elk for his hunting trip. All my horses were so cooperative, except one new mare I purchased. She was hard to catch! I had to laugh--- as I was playing the catch game for about 1/2 hour-- my "Taboo", alias "Boo" mare was following me like a shadow. I had already wormed her and I guess she really liked the stuff!

My sister Sherrie teaches school-- ( You know the 3 good reasons for being a schoolteacher? JUNE, JULY, AUGUST!) So we head for the hills to ride! Our favorite trails are up Payson Canyon, good trails that loop and are SOOO pretty! It had rained a few days before we went on our ride... about an hour up the trail, our horses were nervous and kept looking toward a marshy area.... when we came across this tree, we knew why! MOTHER BEAR!

"Roxy" x "Dallas" foal born!

So.... I was HOME ALONE for the week--- In the morning, when I checked my mares, "Roxy" was in labor! Sure enough, that night, August 24th, 10:15 p.m., her foal was born! So by myself, (I usually do this by myself anyways!) I dried it off, treated the navel, gave it a vitamin shot, pro-biotics, and made sure it nursed. I was so excited---- another curly!! ("Dallas" is 100% curls so far) AND a bay FILLY! Was hoping it would be a amber champagne like her mom, but HEY! I will take curls any day!
I made sure mom was okay, checked the placenta, buried it, then went to bed-- about 1:30 a.m. I got up at 3:30 a.m. (I wake up every night at that time with a major HOT FLASH!! :< anyways! )
So the next day was hot and the little girl was acting plugged up. So I gave her an enema-- weird for a filly-- usually colts have to be helped--AND treated the navel-- AND again did this by myself.
So day three I went out to check my gorgeous curly filly and I am like-- YIKES! Her navel was swollen or herniated big time! A closer look revealed that indeed the curly filly was a curly HORSE COLT! I really do need to wear my glasses at all times! WARM FUZZIES TO YOU!

Stardust's curly smokey filly is two weeks old!

Just like her mom, Stardust, this little girl has energy! I had turned her and her mom out in the pasture for an hour, then would put them up. The second day, I led Stardust into her pen, hoping the little filly would follow like she had done the first day. She stopped outside the gate and would not come in! When I came out to shoo her into the pen with her mom, she used that as an excuse to take off! After a fling around the pasture, she came back outside the gate, and stood there. I picked up a rubber feed bucket and threw it behind her! Startled , she jumped forward through the gate! Captured!
The next day-- same thing. When her grazing time was up, she refused to come through the gate-- rubber bucket-- pop into the pen!
Day three-- she had it figured out! Instead of jumping forward when the rubber feed bucket plopped behind her, she darted to the side and ran a victory lap around the pasture, tail flying high! She won! I have left the two in the pasture permanently!

So this weekend it was stormy-- cold and rainy all day long! My significant other, Morlin, is out of town, helping Kara and Chad move:> So Sat. night about 10 p.m. I went out to put my 2 mares with babies inboard in clean corrals. "Princess" is due in 1 week, and "Stardust" in 2 weeks-- her first foal and MO Foxtrotters' first foal sired by our stallion "Dallas". ---I'm like yeah with my luck we'll have foals tonight! It was dark, so I opened "Stardust's" gate and I am like-- wow she is peeing alot---- then it is like--YIKES! It was her water breaking and the foal was coming! So I calmly (Yeah) lead her into the clean corral next to her and then ran to get some grass hay to throw down in the pen.
On my way up to the barn I grabbed "Princess" who I knew was going to foal that night, and put her in a stall under the barn. I run down the hill, throw the grass down for Stardust (and YES! she plopped down on the pile of clean, dry grass,) then run to the house to get towels, navel dip and vitamin shots. On my way down the hill, as I pass the barn ( by the way---Stardust is major claustrophobic, that is why she is out in a pasture, I REALLY DO LOVE this mare!) I hear gruntings coming from "Princess's" stall. I run up to look-- she is in labor! Since she has had foals before, I leave her to herself!
By now "Stardust" has delivered! I let mom and foal have some time, then dry the baby off. This is MO Foxtrotters first foal out of our stallion "ZGC Dallas". Because it is so dark and the foal is wet, I have no idea what it is or looks like. After drying the foal off I can see--YES! IT IS CURLY! Gorgeous rings of curls circling a perfect star on the foals forehead!
Then I race up the hill-- "Princess" has delivered. I help dry the foal with a big head off. Then I run back down the hill, and treat the navel and give a vitamin shot to our new CURLY FILLY! Then it is back up the hill, and I treat the navel of the horse COLT and give him a vitamin shot. I decide he is BIG all over!
As I watch "Stardust"'s mom instincts kick in-- she is awesome!- I hear the stall walls being bashed. I run up the hill to check it out. The BIG colt is having as hard time standing on the mats with the slippery grass hay . By now Morlin is home and he helps me carry the colt out of the stall. The colt has contracted tendons on his front fetlocks, making it hard to stand. He finally stands and trys to nurse. He keeps falling over. I run down the hill and check on the new curly filly. She is standing and nursing. She looks like she is a smokey black! How did I get that out of a buckskin mare and a chestnut stud? WOW!
I check the colt again, he is laying down. By now it is midnight, I try to go to sleep, but I kept checking the BIG colt -- he finally nursed well and his legs were getting better. By morning his fetlocks were going the right direction. He is the DITTO image of his mom, a sooty buckskin with 4 white socks. One pretty colt! And YEAH! I am keeping the curly filly! GOOD NITE!

I can't wait 'til spring! Today (March 22nd) I saw a new foal! <: CUTE! So now I am getting excited for our arrivals--- I have awhile to wait, June 5th to be exact! Our first arrival should be "Gypsy's". Hopefully she is a curly! "Gypsy" is bred to "DCC Vegas". Then "Princess" is due the week of June 19th. "Princess" is bred to a 16.1 hand palomino stud -"Gypsy's Yellow major L.", alias "Texas"- that is out of "Gypsy". "Princess", a sooty buckskin, has given us buckskins when bred to palomino. FUN!

"Mansey" is a classic champagne in color, with the grey gene. (DARN) She was a stunning color before she greyed out. This is a sweet mare. One year John was taking her on a hunting trip. He had his saddle bags and a sleeping bag tied on back of the saddle. He went to get on Mansey and swung his leg over..... but his leg hooked the stuff behind the saddle. John's leg, the saddle bag, and the saddle continued swinging over and ended up beneath the horse. --John included!-- Mansey just stood in place, then looked at John hanging upside down underneath her belly like.....What are you doing? NICE HORSE!

I had Tamera A put a month of training on "Dallas" She rated him at a 9 on a scale of 1-10. Awesome. She said he was submissive and would do what she asked of him! Not bad for a 2 year old stud!. Also, we measured him-- he is 15.2 hands! YES!

"Midnight Lady A" & "Angel Mist" (both sold) FUNNY STORY: My trainer loved one of the fillies that I sent her to be trained, so she traded me this little red mare for the filly in training. "Red" had great bloodlines, chunky build and Tamera had packed her and used her in 4-H. I ASSUMED / thought-- great!!-- she will be a great beginner horse. (Do you know the definition of Ass u me? Yep-- make an ASS of U and ME!) Anyways, I brought her home. The next morning I put a saddle on her, she was a little antsy, then not to keep Morlin waiting, I went to mount "Red" and the little bugger took off while I was 1/2 way on.. So then I had Morlin hold her while I got on, and when he let "Red" go, she took off popping! She was then dubbed "Red Rocket"! We got her headed up the hill, and she eventually settled down. That evening I called Tamera: "Tamera, when I went to mount "Red" she wouldn't stand! So then I had Morlin hold her and she took off bucking when I did get on her!" Quiet on the other end of the phone. Tamera said, "I've only ridden her a couple times!" ........... So I had put the third ride on her. Come to find out, Tamera had used her in 4-H to show HALTER!...and the reason she packed her...she wasn't broke yet. HA! But she did turn into a nice mount by the end of the summer.
